The Beacon Project:  My Trip to Darnhall School

When I woke up I felt nervous.  When I got there at 9 o'clock I was shocked with amazement.  It was fantastic.  There were so many school children waiting in the library.  Soon it was time to go into the hall.  We left our bags and coats in the library and went in.

There were lots of instruments in the middle of the hall, I could see xylophones, triangles,  glockenspiels, wooden blocks and many more that I didn't know the names of.  We had to sit in a circle and experiment with making different sounds with the instrument we sat near.  We all had a go at playing different rhythms.   At about half past ten we had a break.

When all of us had come back from break, we went into our school groups and took turns playing a tune while Maureen Richards played the piano.  All the tunes were very good.   After we had all played our tunes, we went back into the library to eat our dinner.  It was a bit crowded but it was OK.  After we had eaten we all went out to play.

At about one o'clock we waited for the Head Teacher to take us back into the hall.  When we had all sat down some children from one of the schools sang a song that they had made up--it was called The Beacon Blues.  We all had a go at singing it until we got the hang of it.  We found out that we would have to sing this at the Extravaganza later in the year!

After the singing Maureen Richards played a some music about someone walking through a museum looking at some pictures.  One picture was about children playing in park.  My group decided to make up our own piece of music about children playing in  a park.  Each group chose a picture and made up their own music.  After we had practiced, we all took turns playing our own piece of music for the other groups to listen to.

It was good fun and soon it was time to go home.  The day had been very exciting and I was quite tired.

Several children from our school went to drama, dance and art workshops as well.  Here are a few pictures showing just a little bit of the work they did.

We all agreed on one thing-- whatever workshop we went to was GREAT FUN!!
